The Government School Teachers Association (GSTA) on Sunday claimed to be “distressed” by the transfer order of at least 5,000 government school teachers who have served over 10 years in a school. As the Education Department allegedly seemed to take no action in incorporating the demands, the GSTA has said it has decided to appeal to the Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena for resolution.

The teachers’ body has written to L-G Saxena despite the formation of a four-member grievance redressal committee on Thursday under the instruction of the Director of Education Department.

The GSTA in a statement alleged that “the relieving and joining of the affected teachers continues, indicating that the grievance committee’s influence is not effectively protecting the teachers.”

An order issued by the department the same day promised that the panel would provide redress for grievances of the transferred teachers, based on the complaints the panel receives by July 15.

The GSTA requested the panel on Friday to exempt teachers with pending grievances from relieving and joining procedures until the panel addresses their issues.

Festive offer

Their other demands included to consider online submission of grievances, ensure transparency of grievance resolution, and accept mutual transfer requests even if a teacher may not have served 10 years in the same school.

GSTA general secretary Ajay Veer Yadav said, “We are expecting to meet the L-G on Monday to request his intervention to put a halt to the transfer order or if that is not possible… to consider the grievances of the transferred teachers”.

On Saturday, Yadav wrote to the L-G, appealing for an immediate resolution. The demands mentioned included the revocation of the transfer order or alternatively allow teachers who have been transferred more than 10 km away from home to be placed in schools near their home and likewise for cases with severe medical illness. It requested the cancellation of transfers for teachers nearing retirement, and also for sports coaches and National Cadet Corps officers.
