A month after a building fire claimed the lives of 45 Indians in Kuwait, four members of an Indian family in Kuwait City succumbed to another fire incident in the capital city of the Middle East country on Friday night.
Local authorities reported that Mathews Mulackal, his wife Lini Abraham, and their two children died from smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in their apartment. The family had just returned that same day from a vacation in Kerala, India.
The fire, believed to be caused by a short circuit in the air conditioner, occurred at about 8 pm in their second-floor flat located in the Abbasiya area, according to The Arab Times newspaper.
Major General Khaled Fahd, the acting head of the General Fire Force, was present at the scene and noted that the fire teams successfully controlled the blaze in the apartment building.
Mathews was employed by news agency Reuters, while his wife Lini Abraham worked as a nurse at Adan Hospital in Al Ahmadi Governorate. Their children attended Bhavans School.
Relatives of the family, originally from Neerattupuram in Kerala’s Alappuzha, confirmed that Mathews had been working in Kuwait for 15 years and had left India, with his wife and children on Thursday night, reaching Kuwait around 4 p.m. local time on Friday.

The Indian Embassy in Kuwait has stated that it is in contact with the Mulackal’s family, back in Kerala and will ensure the early repatriation of the their mortal remains. The embassy said, in a post on X: “Embassy @indembkwt expresses its deepest condolences on the tragic demise of Mr Mathews Mulackal, his wife, and 2 children due to a fire in his flat in Abbasiya yesterday night. The embassy is in touch with his family and will ensure the early repatriation of mortal remains.”
