A 42-year-old Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) employee allegedly died by suicide inside a store room on the third floor of the corporation’s head office in Bengaluru on Monday. The man’s body was discovered a day later after his family reached the office looking for him, the police said.
The deceased was identified as Mahesh Ukkali. A resident of Kengeri, Ukkali was an assistant in the BMTC’s recruitment section for the last 10 years. A police official said that Ukkali was a native of Basavana Bagewadi in Karnataka’s Bijapur district.
“Ukkali’s wife had tried calling him on Monday but could not reach him. She spoke to some of his friends but could not locate him. Suspecting something wrong, the family came to the BMTC office on Tuesday afternoon,” a police official said.
The security officer at the BMTC said that Ukkali had taken the storeroom’s key by signing in the register on Monday and had never returned the keys. When the officials checked the storeroom, his body was found, the police said.
The Wilson Garden police have filed an unnatural death report after taking a complaint from his wife. A police officer said that they are yet to ascertain the reason behind Ukkali’s death. “He was addicted to alcohol and often had disputes with family members…but nothing major. He is survived by his wife and two school-going daughters,” the officer added.
