At least 11 government school teachers were found coming to the classes in an inebriated condition on a regular basis in tribal dominated Dindori district in Madhya Pradesh, a review report prepared by the district tribal affairs department stated. A departmental inquiry has been initiated against them, said officials. According to the officials, nine other teachers who have remained absent for a long period of time have also been served notices.
Providing details, Assistant Commissioner Tribal Affairs Department District (Dindori) Santosh Shukla told The Indian Express that on June 28, he had held a meeting of block education officers to investigate the allegations of teachers coming to the classes drunk and the ones who have been absent.
“There are around 11-12 teachers who have been accused of consuming alcohol and attending classes. We have initiated a departmental inquiry against them. They will have to explain their conduct. However, they have not been suspended yet. Whether they actually consumed alcohol will only be made clear through a medical report,” said Shukla.
“Furthermore, nine teachers who remained absent for a long period of time, some of them for years, have also been served notices. They probably took other jobs and failed to inform the department. They were not receiving any salary during the period they were absent,” Shukla said.
At least seven teachers are in violation of civil service rules as they have two wives. “We are investigating these claims. Some of these cases are in court as well,” Shukla said. To improve the education system in the district’s government schools, similar investigations would be conducted in all development blocks, said Shukla.
